You have to break a few eggs to make an omelet. In our case we broke 69 soil fractures in 7 overburden wells and 53 bedrock fractures in 11 bedrock wells to inject approximately 8,000 gallons of vegetable oil emulsion (VOE) and sodium bicarbonate to complete the full-scale bioremediation installation at a site in North Carolina. Significant technical challenges were overcome to maximize the vertical and horizontal distribution of the VOE and treat the TCE source area beneath the manufacturing building. The full-scale source treatment was implemented to reduce TCE mass flux and accelerate the natural attenuation of the off-site portion of impacted groundwater.
